Jane Eyre - Book review

by Aashi, 7, Australia

Jane Eyre is a classic book about love and friendship. The original book was written by Charlotte Bronte was a teacher, who loved writing along with her siblings. When Charlotte Bronte died her house was turned into a museum.

She wrote Jane Eyre in 1847. The copy I read was written by Mary Sebag- Montefiore and illustrated by Alan Marks.

Like Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre was a teacher. She became a teacher after abandoning her supposed husband. Jane Eyre’s life flipped and wobbled as kind Jane moved around her home country and all this time she read lots of her favourite books.

Jane was an orphan who lived with her stubborn aunty and her mean cousin. Her aunty always punished her without a reason and not one hour was spent without punishments.

One day Jane’s stubborn aunty sent her to a boarding school that made the pupils (students) shiver and whacked canes and rods on their necks and chests. Until one winter day most kids caught bad diseases and most kids in the school died.

This all sounds very sad but the book has a happy ending with lots of kindness. I would encourage to read this book as this gives a view of olden days.

I would rate this book 4 out of 5 stars as it is sometimes scary. I would recommend this book for 7-9 year olds.

A series of unfortunate events: The bad beginning

 by Ayaan, 10, Australia

A book written by Lemony Snicket (aka Daniel Handler)

The bad beginning is the first book in the ‘a series of unfortunate events’. The series, unsurprisingly, has thirteen books, and the thirteenth book ends on the thirteenth chapter! These books are about the misfortune of the Baudelaire children.

The first book in the series, the bad beginning, is the start of the Baudlaire children’s misfortune and mystery. The Baudelaire children are orphans after a fire that wiped out their parents. Violet, who is the oldest and a girl of fourteen, loves inventing. Klause, a boy of twelve, is an avid reader. Sunny, an infant, has four sharp teeth and loves to bite things. Violet is to inherit the Baudelaire fortune when she is of age.

They are adopted by Count Olaf who is horrid and mean. But is he just mean or is something sinister going on? When they come over for dinner, his acting troupe look a bit suspicious. When the children are invited to perform in Count Olaf’s play, something seems amiss. What are Count Olaf and his troupe planning?

I would rate this book five stars as it is mysteriously interesting. This book is good for people who like mystery and are aged 9+.

Oh, by the way, the book is written in a way that not many books are written. Just something you might want to know.

The Brilliant World of Tom Gates is the first book and a perfect one to get you into fabulous Tom Gates series. The series is about a young boy named Tom Gates who is in Year 5 and loves to doodle. In ‘The Brilliant World of Tom Gates’ Tom wants to go to his favourite band’s - Dude 3 - concert.

The story revolves around Tom Gates who wants to invite two of his friends to go to the concert, but the tickets can’t be found! But there is another kid in the class called Marcus Meldrew, who is also interested in the concert. Tom always doodles Marcus as a monster!

This is a brilliant book if you like funny illustrations and words. I would rate it five stars and recommend it for ages 6-10.
